Baby Shoe Size Guide: How to Measure Little Feet

Baby shoe sizing varies between styles and suppliers, so age is only a guide. Two babies of the same age can need completely different sizes. Measuring your baby's feet at home is a useful starting point before checking the sizing guidance for the shoes you want to order.

How to measure

  1. Pop a piece of paper on a hard floor.
  2. Have your baby stand, or gently hold the foot flat against the paper if they are not walking yet.
  3. Mark the heel and the tip of the longest toe.
  4. Measure that length in centimetres. Measure both feet and use the longer measurement.
  5. Compare the measurement with the specific product's sizing guidance. Check whether its chart lists foot length, insole length or outsole length, and follow any fit allowance provided for that style.

Measure with the socks your baby will wear with the shoes.

Understanding the size guide

The example below lists outsole lengths, which measure the outside of the shoe from heel to toe. Outsole length is not the same as the usable length inside the shoe, so do not subtract a fixed amount to calculate the right fit.

Size guide Outsole length
0–6 months 11 cm
6–12 months 12 cm
12–18 months 13 cm

These measurements are a guide only and do not apply to every style. Our shoes come from different suppliers, so always check the measurements on the product page. If the chart gives only outsole length and you are unsure which size to choose, contact us before ordering.

Pre-walkers, sneakers and boots

Soft pre-walkers are an option for warmth and photos before your baby is walking. When comparing shoes for a baby who is up and moving, look at sole flexibility, secure fastenings and the fit guidance for each style.

Cowboy boots and glitter sneakers are a favourite for photos and parties. Check that the heel is not slipping and the toes are not pressed against the end.

A few things we tell customers

  • Do not choose a size by age alone. Check your baby's foot measurement against the product's sizing guidance.
  • Check the fit regularly as your baby grows.
  • Socks change the fit. Measure with the socks they will wear.
  • A shoe that is too big can be as awkward as one that is too small. Follow the fit allowance recommended for the specific style rather than automatically sizing up.
